Many people are under the impression that in order to increase their search rankings on their website or blog, they need to engage in the same online activities that worked a few years ago. Unfortunately with Google’s new Penguin and Panda updates, many of these sites are now seeing their rankings suffering because of this. It is very important to ensure that you do not engage in the following practices to try and increase your search engine rankings.
1. Seek Link Exchanges
In years gone by, seeking link exchanges with sites that provided their readers with top quality content was one of the easiest ways to build your search engine rankings. These days, this method is no longer effective because of the fact that the Penguin and Panda updates are recognizing more and more links as being spam.
2. Focusing on Link Directories
By submitting your website to as many link directories as possible, it used to be a guarantee that you would receive a lot of traffic in return for your efforts. However, today these directories have very little meaning because the Google updates favor more natural ways of getting web traffic such as leaving a link when commenting on a post you have read or sharing a post that you have enjoyed reading on a social networking site.
3. Adding Hundreds of Useless Pages to Your Website
When designing a website or blog, it is important to ensure that you only place top quality content on all of your website pages because Google will penalize your site if there are any pages on your site that are irrelevant or that contain poorly constructed content. When adding pages to your website, always ensure that you have enough good quality and relevant content to fill them before just adding pages to try and increase the site’s search rankings.
4. Having a Quantity versus Quality Approach
Many people think that the more content they have on their website, the more chance they have of scoring higher rankings with the various search engines. This is no longer true because Google now favors quality content over quantity. That is why it is better to rather have a few well-constructed posts on your website or blog than a few hundred that are written in a hurry and poorly constructed.
5. Stuff Your Website with Keywords
One of the most unscrupulous ways of gaining search engines rankings used to be to simply stuff websites and posts with keywords that were irrelevant to the content already on the site. These days, it is recommended to make use of a keyword density ratio of between 0.5% and 2% so that the articles make more sense to read and aren’t simply written to gain search rankings.
By avoiding these practices when designing and adding content to your website, it will stand a higher chance of being ranked naturally by the most important search engines. It is always important to remember that quality will always be more important than quantity.
